KS1 Music

In Year 1 and 2 are taught by their class teacher or a teacher from their year group.

Throughout the academic year, the pupils will listen to and talk about music; sing and play instruments together; and experiment with instruments and their voices through improvising and composing.

The Music curriculum is developed and supported by Mrs Bell, our specialist music teacher and coordinator.

Spring Term 2020

Please see below for an overview of what your child will be learning in the Spring Term.

Year 1 Year 2

Spring 1

The pupils will continue learning about pulse and rhythm by developing rhythms from words and their syllables. They will use movement to help show pulse and rests in music.

Spring 1

The pupils will listen to a variety of music from a diverse range of composers including Franz Schubert, Evelyn Glennie and Steve Reich. They will explore pulse and rhythm through movement, playing, singing, listening and graphic scores. They will work in small groups to practice and perform an ostinato, which they will play to the class.

Spring 2

The pupils will learn about how weather can be depicted through music. They will listen to, and talk about, 'The Four Seasons' by Vivaldi. This will be a stimulus for the pupils to create their own weather-based music using a variety of tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments. They will write their music as a graphic score and perform their music to a small audience.

Spring 2

The pupils will create a piece of art work from listening to 'Earth' by Hans Zimmer.  They will also use art as a stimulus to improvise and create their own music, using a variety of tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments, as well as found sounds and sounds from the environment. They will record their sounds using GarageBand, and will manipulate and order their sounds into a class piece.

Extended Music Curriculum

In Years 1 and 2, the pupils have the opportunity to join the Singing Club with Miss Midgley in the Spring Term.

In year 2, the pupils also have the opportunity to learn the ukulele, violin and fife (when they have their adult front teeth).

Please keep a look out for notices advertising these instrumental lessons and clubs, if your child is interested in learning an instrument or developing their singing.
